Songs, jokes, and satire, comedic sketches, plays, and poetry, all provided an opportunity for discussion and debate about national identity and an outlet for resistance to British and elite authority. This book examines how, from the 1870s until the eve of the 1919 revolution, popular media and culture provided ordinary Egyptians with a framework to construct and negotiate a modern national identity. Ordinary Egyptians shifts the typical focus of study away from the intellectual elite to understand the rapid politicization of the growing literate middle classes and brings the semi -literate and illiterate urban masses more fully into the historical narrative. It introduces the concept of "media- capitalism," which expands the analysis of nationalism beyond print alone to incorporate audiovisual and performance media. It was through these various media that a collective camaraderie crossing class lines was formed and, as this book uncovers, an Egyptian national identity emerged 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 Nationalism|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108271|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Nationalism|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108271|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 National characteristics, Egyptian|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089971|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 National characteristics, Egyptian|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089971|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Popular culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85104904|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Popular culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85104904|zEgypt|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033832 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Popular culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1071344 650 7 National characteristics, Egyptian.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033411 650 7 HISTORY.|2bisacsh 651 7 Egypt.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208755 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFahmy, Ziad (Ziad Adel).|tOrdinary Egyptians.|dStanford, California : Stanford University Press, [2011], ©2011|z9780804772112|w(DLC) 2011000517 |w(OCoLC)692288486 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=373124|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
