Each city was rebuilt according to two intertwined modern trends. First, certain local edifices were chosen to be resurrected as "sacred sites" to redeem the national story after Nazism. Second, these tokens of a reimagined past were staged against the hegemony of modernist architecture and planning, which wiped out much of whatever was left of the urban landscape that had survived the war. All three cities thus emerged with simplified architectural narratives, whose historically layered complexities only survived in fragments where this twofold "redemptive reconstruction" after Nazism had proven less vigorous, sometimes because local citizens took action to save and appropriate them. Transcending both the Iron Curtain and freshly homogenized nation-states, three cities under three rival regimes shared a surprisingly common history before, during, and after Hitler-in terms of both top-down planning policies and residents' spontaneous efforts to make home out of their city as its shape shifted around them"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (ProQuest Ebook Central platform, viewed June 27, 2022). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Collective memory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2006002444 650 0 Architecture and state.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85006896 650 0 Nationalism and architecture.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85090155 650 0 Architecture and society.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85006894 650 0 Architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85006611|xPolitical aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651 650 0 Urban renewal|xCitizen participation.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85141325 650 0 Urban renewal|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85141324|xPolitical aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651 650 7 Collective memory.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1739814 650 7 Architecture and state.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/813586 650 7 Nationalism and architecture.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033872 650 7 Architecture and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/813574 650 7 Architecture|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/813501 650 7 Architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/813346 650 7 Urban renewal|xCitizen participation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1162540 650 7 Urban renewal|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1162564 650 7 Urban renewal.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1162536 650 7 HISTORY / General.|2bisacsh 650 7 Buildings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/840962 651 0 Wrocław (Poland)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80050802|xBuildings, structures, etc.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh99004820|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Leipzig (Germany)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79125883|xBuildings, structures, etc.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh99004820|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Frankfurt am Main (Germany)|xBuildings, structures, etc. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008115116 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 651 7 Poland|zWrocław.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1208518 651 7 Germany|zLeipzig.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1206761 651 7 Germany|zFrankfurt am Main.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1207215 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDemshuk, Andrew, 1980-|tThree cities after Hitler.|dPittsburgh : University of Pittsburgh Press, [2021]|z9780822946977|w(DLC) 2021030568 |w(OCoLC)1225192571 830 0 Series in Russian and East European studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n84749108 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2990577|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
