Kathryn Newfont provides context for those events by examining the environmental history of this region over the course of three hundred years, identifying what she calls commons environmentalism--a cultural strain of conservation in American history that has gone largely unexplored. Efforts in the 1970s to expand federal wilderness areas in the Pisgah and Nantahala national forests generated strong opposition. For many mountain residents the idea of unspoiled wilderness seemed economically unsound, historically dishonest, and elitist. Newfont shows that local people's sense of commons environmentalism required access to the forests that they viewed as semipublic places for hunting, fishing, and working. Policies that removed large tracts from use were perceived as 'enclosure' and resisted. Incorporating deep archival work and years of interviews and conversations with Appalachian residents, Blue Ridge Commons reveals a tradition of people building robust forest protection movements on their own terms."--Page 4 of cover. 650 0 Forest conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85050567|zNorth Carolina.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007042-781 650 0 Forest conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85050567|zBlue Ridge Mountains.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85015083-781 650 0 Natural resources, Communal|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85090262|zNorth Carolina.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007042-781 650 0 Natural resources, Communal|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85090262|zBlue Ridge Mountains. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85015083-781 650 0 Environmentalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh93004752|zNorth Carolina.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79007042-781 650 0 Environmentalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh93004752|zBlue Ridge Mountains.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85015083-781 650 7 Forest conservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 932069 650 7 Natural resources, Communal.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1034516 650 7 Environmentalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 913543 650 7 Environmental conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1983362 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Ecology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/901476 651 0 North Carolina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007042|xEnvironmental conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 Blue Ridge Mountains|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85015083|xEnvironmental conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 North Carolina|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85092493 651 0 Blue Ridge Mountains|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85015083|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011436 651 7 North Carolina.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1204304 651 7 United States|zBlue Ridge Mountains.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1243051 830 0 Environmental history and the American South.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2006038966 901 MARCIVE 20231220 994 C0|bRID
