Cooke Jr. offers a fresh and appealing cross-disciplinary study of the furnituremakers, social structure, household possessions, and surviving pieces of furniture of two neighboring New England communities. Drawing on both documentary and artifactual sources, Cooke explores the interplay among producer, process, and style in demonstrating why and how the social economies of these two seemingly similar towns differed significantly during the late colonial and early national periods. Throughout the latter half of the eighteenth century, Cooke explains, the yeoman town of Newtown relied on native joiners whose work satisfied the expectations of their fellow townspeople. These traditionalists combined craftwork with farming and made relatively plain, conservative furniture. By contrast, the typical joiner in the neighboring gentry town of Woodbury was the immigrant innovator. Born and raised elsewhere in Connecticut and serving a diverse clientele, these craftsmen were free of the cultural constraints that affected their Newtown contemporaries. Relying almost entirely on furnituremaking for their livelihood, they were free to pay greater attention to stylistically sensitive features than to mere function. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 Project Muse|bProject Muse Open Access 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1899|2fast 648 7 Geschichte 1760-1820.|2swd 650 0 Furniture industry and trade|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85052567|zConnecticut|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79074102-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Furniture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052522|zConnecticut|zWoodbury|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n83205127-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Furniture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052522|zConnecticut|zWoodbury|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n83205127-781|xHistory|y18th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006124 650 0 Furniture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052522|zConnecticut|zNewtown|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81035811-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Furniture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052522|zConnecticut|zNewtown|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81035811-781|xHistory|y18th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006124 650 07 M©obeltischlerei.|2swd 650 7 Furniture industry and trade.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/936544 650 7 Furniture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/936488 650 7 Economic history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 901974 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 Woodbury (Conn.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n83205127|xEconomic conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005736 651 0 Newtown (Conn.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81035811|xEconomic conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005736 651 7 Connecticut.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205688 651 7 Connecticut|zWoodbury.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1226231 651 7 Connecticut|zNewtown.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1212738 651 7 Neuengland.|2swd 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 655 7 Electronic books. .|2local 710 2 Project Muse.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174 710 2 Project Muse,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174|edistributor. 830 0 Studies in industry and society ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n42023902|v10. 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 856 40 |zOnline eBook.
