Across a wide range of otherwise-unrelated weapons programs, the Pentagon is now pursuing arms that are deliberately crafted to be less powerful, less deadly, and less destructive than the systems they are designed to supplement or replace. This direction is historically anomalous; military forces generally pursue ever-bigger bangs, but the modern conditions of counter-insurgency warfare and military operations "other than war" (such as peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance) demand a military capable of modulated force. By providing a capacity to intervene deftly yet effectively, the new generations of "useable" weaponry should enable the U.S. military to accomplish its demanding missions in a manner consistent with legal obligations, public relations realities, and political constraints. Five case studies are provided, regarding precision-guided "smart bombs," low-yield nuclear weapons, self-neutralizing anti- personnel land mines, directed-energy anti-satellite weapons, and non-lethal weapons. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Military weapons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh91001438|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Weapons systems|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85145837|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Precision guided munitions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85106233|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Tactical nuclear weapons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85131868|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Land mines|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh96001507|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n78095330-781 650 0 Anti-satellite weapons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85005620|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Nonlethal weapons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh89004000|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 7 Military weapons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1021577 650 7 Weapons systems.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1173046 650 7 Armed Forces.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/814586 650 7 Precision guided munitions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1074973 650 7 Tactical nuclear weapons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1141864 650 7 Land mines.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/991274 650 7 Anti-satellite weapons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/810364 650 7 Nonlethal weapons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1038779 651 0 United States|xArmed Forces|xWeapons systems|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85139905|vCase studies. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKoplow, David A., 1951-|tDeath by moderation.|dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2010|z9780521119511|w(DLC) 2009017285 |w(OCoLC)320434538 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=304440|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
