It was the site of the first nuclear explosion, the birthplace of the American space program, and the primary site for testing U.S. missile capabilities. In this environmental history of White Sands Missile Range, Ryan H. Edgington traces the uneasy relationships between the military, the federal government, local ranchers, environmentalists, state game and fish personnel, biologists and ecologists, state and federal political figures, hunters, and tourists after World War II--as they all struggled to define and productively use the militarized western landscape. Environmentalists, ranchers, tourists, and other groups joined together to transform the meaning and uses of this region, challenging the authority of the national security state to dictate the environmental and cultural value of a rural American landscape. As a result, White Sands became a locus of competing geographies informed not only by the far- reaching intellectual, economic, and environmental changes wrought by the Cold War but also by regional history, culture, and traditions"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Land use|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85074345|xEnvironmental aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005383|zNew Mexico|zWhite Sands Missile Range|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82028923-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Land use|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85074345|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zNew Mexico|zWhite Sands Missile Range|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82028923-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social conflict|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123927|zNew Mexico|zWhite Sands Missile Range|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82028923-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Nuclear weapons|xTesting|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85093130|xEnvironmental aspects|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005383|zNew Mexico |zWhite Sands Missile Range|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82028923-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Landscape protection|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85074474|zNew Mexico|zWhite Sands Missile Range |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82028923-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Environmental policy|zUnited States|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008119761 650 0 Militarism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85085126|xEnvironmental aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005383|zWest (U.S.)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85146140-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Land use|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/991489 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Land use.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/991472 650 7 Land use|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/991558 650 7 Social conflict.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122378 650 7 Nuclear weapons|xTesting|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1041011 650 7 Nuclear weapons|xTesting.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1041006 650 7 Landscape protection.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 992049 650 7 Environmental policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 913250 650 7 Military policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1021386 650 7 Militarism|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1020841 650 7 Militarism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1020839 651 0 White Sands Missile Range (N.M.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82028923|xEnvironmental conditions. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 White Sands Missile Range (N.M.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82028923|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 United States|xMilitary policy.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140379 651 7 New Mexico|zWhite Sands Missile Range.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1218573 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aEdgington, Ryan H.|tRange wars |z9780803238442|w(DLC) 2013048673|w(OCoLC)861955628 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=779489|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
