The culture of Mexican segregation -- The borderlands of race and rights -- Establishing a culture of segregation -- Formal and informal Mexican education within the context of segregation -- An accommodated form of segregation -- Part 2. Processes of racial integration -- Troubling the culture of school segregation : Mexican American teachers and the path to desegregation -- Surgiendo de la base : community movement and the desegregation of the Catholic Church -- Epilogue. 520 Throughout much of the twentieth century, Mexican Americans experienced segregation in many areas of public life, but the structure of Mexican segregation differed from the strict racial divides of the Jim Crow South. Factors such as higher socioeconomic status, lighter skin color, and Anglo cultural fluency allowed some Mexican Americans to gain limited access to the Anglo power structure. Paradoxically, however, this partial assimilation made full desegregation more difficult for the rest of the Mexican American community, which continued to experience informal segregation long after federal and state laws officially ended the practice. In this historical ethnography, Jennifer R. Njera offers a layered rendering and analysis of Mexican segregation in a South Texas community in the first half of the twentieth century. Using oral histories and local archives, she brings to life Mexican origin peoples' experiences with segregation. Through their stories and supporting documentary evidence, Njera shows how the ambiguous racial status of Mexican origin people allowed some of them to be exceptions to the rule of Anglo racial dominance. She demonstrates that while such exceptionality might suggest the permeability of the color line, in fact the selective and limited incorporation of Mexicans into Anglo society actually reinforced segregation by creating an illusion that the community had been integrated and no further changes were needed. Njera also reveals how the actions of everyday people ultimately challenged racial/racist ideologies and created meaningful spaces for Mexicans in spheres historically dominated by Anglos. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Mexican Americans|xSegregation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh97000631|zTexas|zLa Feria|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82251772-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85084500|zTexas|zLa Feria|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82251772-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Mexican Americans|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh92003973|zLa Feria|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82251772-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Race discrimination|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85110237|zTexas|zLa Feria|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82251772-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Social movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123979|zTexas|zLa Feria|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82251772-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Oral history|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85095238|zTexas|zLa Feria.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82251772-781 650 7 Mexican Americans|xSegregation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019148 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Mexican Americans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1019081 650 7 Mexican Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1019072 650 7 Race discrimination.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086465 650 7 Social movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122657 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 650 7 Oral history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1047055 650 7 Social movements.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001322 651 0 La Feria (Tex.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82251772|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007552|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 0 Texas, South|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh94001245|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00007552|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 7 Texas|zLa Feria.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1223597 651 7 South Texas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1692671 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNájera, Jennifer R., 1975-|tBorderlands of race.|bFirst edition.|dAustin : University of Texas Press, [2015]|z9780292767553|w(DLC) 2014023108 |w(OCoLC)892212968 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=937485|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
