Released in 1948, The Last Stage was a pioneering work and the first narrative film to portray the Nazi German camp. Haltof's fascinating book offers to English-speaking readers a wealth of new materials and sources, mostly from original Polish sources and obtained through extensive archival research. With its powerful dramatization of the camp experience, The Last Stage shaped subsequent Shoah films, establishing several quasi-documentary themes easily discernible in later Holocaust narratives: the dark, "realistic" images of the camp; the passionate moralistic appeal; and the clear divisions between victims and perpetrators. Jakubowska's film introduced the images of camp life that are now archetypal--for example, morning and evening roll calls on the Appelplatz, the arrival of transport trains at Birkenau, the separation of families, and tracking shots over the belongings left by the gassed camp victims. These and other images reinforced the depiction of Nazi German concentration camps and are discernible in a number of subsequent American films, including George Stevens's The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), Alan Pakula's Sophie's Choice (1982), and Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1993). Haltof discusses the unusual circumstances that surrounded the production of the film on location at Auschwitz-Birkenau and summarizes critical debates surrounding the film's release. The book offers much of interest to film historians and readers interested in the Holocaust.--|cProvided by Publisher. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed by Knowledge Unlatched under a Creative Commons license|uhttps://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 600 10 Jakubowska, Wanda,|d1907-1998|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no99047892|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005576 600 17 Jakubowska, Wanda,|d1907-1998.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/435573 630 00 Ostatni etap (Motion picture)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2017104224 630 7 Ostatni etap (Motion picture)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2057333 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945), in motion pictures.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061523 650 7 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) in motion pictures.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958927 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHaltof, Marek.|tScreening Auschwitz. |dEvanston, Illinois : Northwestern University Press, 2018 |z9780810136083|z0810136082|w(DLC) 2017038008 |w(OCoLC)975415005 830 0 Cultural expressions of World War II.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2013006579 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctv3znz28|zOnline eBook.
