520 This title offers a detailed overview of traditional
buildings from Anglo-Saxon times to the 19th century,
based on detailed reports undertaken on over hundred
individual buildings in the region over the last decade.
The authors describe cruck buildings, barns, moated sites,
manor houses, town and village houses, farm buildings and
19th century model farms, brewing and public houses,
communal buildings and rectories. Alongside the detailed
       descriptions of individual buildings, copiously
illustrated with photographs and plans, is more general
discussion of the architecture and the history and economy
of the region. There are special sections devoted to
subjects including fireplaces, secrets under the
floorboards, wall paintings and smoke blackened thatch.
