The Oxford Union regularly welcomed heads of state and stars of screen and served as the training ground for the politically ambitious offspring of Britain's 'better classes.' Malcolm X, by contrast, was the global icon of race militancy. For many, he personified revolution and danger. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the debate, this book brings to life the dramatic events surrounding the visit, showing why Oxford invited Malcolm X, why he accepted, and the effect of the visit on Malcolm X and British students. Stephen Tuck tells the human story behind the debate and also uses it as a starting point to discuss larger issues of Black Power, the end of empire, British race relations, immigration, and student rights. Coinciding with a student-led campaign against segregated housing, the visit enabled Malcolm X to make connections with radical students from the Caribbean, Africa, and South Asia, giving him a new perspective on the global struggle for racial equality, and in turn, radicalizing a new generation of British activists. Masterfully tracing the reverberations on both sides of the Atlantic, Tuck chronicles how the personal transformation of the dynamic American leader played out on the international stage"-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 X, Malcolm,|d1925-1965|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79148296|xTravel|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005039|zEngland|zOxford.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79065853-781 600 14 X, Malcolm,|d1925-1965. 600 17 X, Malcolm,|d1925-1965.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/47747 610 20 Oxford Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n85095134|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 610 27 Oxford Union.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/600728 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Civil rights movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026384|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Anti-racism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007000043|zEngland|zOxford|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79065853-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Travel.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1155558 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Civil rights movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862708 650 7 Anti-racism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1742067 650 7 Anti-racism.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0002269 651 7 England|zOxford.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1205511 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Gates, Henry Louis,|cJr.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81146304|ewriter of foreword. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aTuck, Stephen G.N.|tNight Malcolm X spoke at the Oxford Union.|dOakland, California : University of California Press, [2014]|z9780520279339 |w(DLC) 2014027340|w(OCoLC)903172425 830 0 George Gund Foundation imprint in African American studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n99041092 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=835036|zOnline eBook.
