"An essentially complete shell and dentary from the Navesink greensand (Early to Middle Maestrichtian, Late Cretaceous) of Sewell, Gloucester County, provides the first adequate information on the osteology and relationships of Peritresius ornatus (Leidy, 1856). A toxochelyid turtle of the subfamily Lophochelyinae, Peritresius is characterized by Trionyx-like sculpturing of the dermal plates, a serrated shell margin and sharp median dorsal keel with epithecal elevations, a shortened neural series, and a fenestrated plastron with shallow limb-notches and a high plastral index...."--From Abstract, p. 3. |
