No longer necessary for labor, children became economic liabilities and twentieth-century parents exhibited a new level of anxiety concerning the welfare of their children and their own ability to parent effectively. What caused this shift in the ways parenting and childhood were experienced and perceived? Why, at a time of relative ease and prosperity, do parents continue to grapple with uncertainty and with unreasonable expectations of both themselves and their children? Peter N. Stearns explains this phenomenon by examining the new issues the twentieth century brought to bear on families. Surveying popular media, "expert" childrearing manuals, and newspapers and journals published throughout the century, Stearns shows how schooling, physical and emotional vulnerability and the rise in influence of commercialism became primary concerns for parents. The result, Stearns shows, is that contemporary parents have come to believe that they are participating in a culture of neglect and diminishing standards. Anxious parents: a modern history of childrearing in America shows the reasons for this belief through an historic examination of modern parenting. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Child rearing|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008100378|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Parenting|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008108905|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Parent and child|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008108900|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Child development|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008100375|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Child rearing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/854588 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Parenting.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1053407 650 7 Parent and child.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1053308 650 7 Child development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 854393 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aStearns, Peter N.|tAnxious parents.|dNew York : New York University Press, ©2003|z0814798292|w(DLC) 2002152802|w(OCoLC)50920712 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=129497|zOnline eBook.
