This book is the first to examine the intersection of black activism and the migration of Caribbeans and Africans to Paris during this era and, as Patrick Manning notes in the foreword, successfully shows how "black Parisians-in their daily labors, weekend celebrations, and periodic protests-opened the way to 'decolonizing the Republic, ' advancing the respect for their rights as citizens." Contrasted to earlier works focusing on the black intellectual elite, Decolonizing the Republic maps the formation of a working-class black France. Readers will better comprehend how those peoples of African descent who settled in France and fought to improve their socioeconomic conditions changed the French perception of Caribbean and African identity, laying the foundation for contemporary black activists to deploy a new politics of social inclusion across the demographics of race, class, gender, and nationality. This book complicates conventional understandings of decolonization, and in doing so opens a new and much-needed chapter in the history of the black Atlantic. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Africans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85001757|zFrance|zParis.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79058874-781 650 0 West Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146185|zFrance|zParis.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79058874-781 650 0 Immigrants|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008104282|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Africans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/799938 650 7 West Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1173950 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 0 Paris (France)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79058874|xEmigration and immigration|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005907|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 0 Paris (France)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79058874|xEthnic relations|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005646|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 651 7 France|zParis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205283 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGermain, Félix F.|tDecolonizing the Republic.|dEast Lansing : Michigan State University Press, [2016]|z9781611862041|w(DLC) 2015033652|w(OCoLC)920469695 830 0 Ruth Simms Hamilton African diaspora series.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2012087461 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1445524|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
