In The Glass State, Annette Fierro views the many meanings of transparency in architecture. Specifically, she analyzes the transparent monumental buildings that were built in Paris between 1981 and 1998 as part of Francois Mitterrand's program of Grands Projets. The Grands Projets provide a rare opportunity to study a finite set of buildings constructed of similar materials, in the same time period, in a specific urban landscape, and with related ideological missions. Fierro employs a "discourse of the detail," in which the smallest architectural detail manifests the political, theoretical, and urban contexts of the building's design and construction. She examines the paradox of the most pared down architectural configurations being used to support the most complex meanings. Intrinsic to Mitterrand's glass buildings in Paris, for example, is a political concept: the metaphor of accessibility as a means of breaking open cultural institutions previously closed to the public. In addition to the structures of the Grands Projets -- the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Grande and Petite Pyramides du Louvre, the glass greenhouses at utopian park projects at La Villette and Andre Citroën and the Bibliotheque nationale de France -- Fierro discusses the Fondation Cartier and two precedent structures, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Eiffel Tower. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Mitterrand, François,|d1916-1996.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50000412 600 14 Mitterrand, François,|d1916-96. 600 17 Mitterrand, François,|d1916-1996.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/82 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Glass construction|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85055130|zFrance|zParis.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781 650 0 Public architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000216|zFrance|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Architecture and state|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85006896|zFrance|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Symbolism in architecture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85131414|zFrance|zParis.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781 650 7 Glass construction.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 943109 650 7 Public architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1082056 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Architecture and state.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/813586 650 7 Symbolism in architecture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1140770 651 0 Paris (France)|xBuildings, structures, etc.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008116525 651 7 France|zParis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205283 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFierro, Annette.|tGlass state. |dCambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, ©2003|w(DLC) 2002024448 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=175139|zOnline eBook.
