Emerging out of a three- year National Science Foundation grant (2014-17), the book turns a critical eye toward the growing inclusion of the formerly enslaved within these museums, specifically examining advances but also continuing inequalities in how they narrate and memorialize the formerly enslaved. Using assemblage theory as a framework, Remembering Enslavement offers an innovative approach for studying heritage sites, retelling and remapping the ways that slavery and the enslaved are included in southern plantation museums. It examines multiple plantation sites across geographic areas, considering the experiences of a diversity of actors: tourists, museum managers/owners, and tour guides/ interpreters. This approach allows for an understanding of regional variations among plantation museums, narratives, and performances, as well as more in-depth study of the plantation tour experience and public interpretations. The authors conclude the book with a set of questions designed to help professionals reassemble plantation museum narratives and landscapes to more justly position the formerly enslaved at their center."--Page [4] of cover. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on March 25, 2022). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Historical museums|zSouthern States. 650 0 Slavery|zSouthern States|xHistoriography. 650 0 Plantation life|zSouthern States|xHistoriography. 650 0 Historic sites|zSouthern States. 650 7 Historic sites|2fast 650 7 Historical museums|2fast 650 7 Plantation life|xHistoriography|2fast 650 7 Slavery|xHistoriography|2fast 651 7 Southern States|2fast 700 1 Hanna, Stephen P.,|eauthor. 700 1 Alderman, Derek H.,|eauthor. 700 1 Carter, Perry,|eauthor. 700 1 Bright, Candace Forbes,|eauthor. 700 1 Butler, David L.|q(David Lawrence),|eauthor.|1https:// id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjBd6xG6pXQjJFgrx3Yr4q 776 08 |iEbook version :|z9780820360959 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPotter, Amy E.|tRemembering enslavement. |dAthens : The University of Georgia Press, [2022] |z0820360937|z9780820360935|w(OCoLC)1285566965 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=3197941|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
