Twenty-four Cases of Police-caused Homicide in Guyana, 1980 to 1994. 520 8 Annotation|bExamines police violence in Guyana through consideration of the social, political, and legal structure of the nation. 520 8 Annotation|bThe legacy of colonialism and its influence on policing and society is of crucial significance in developing an explanation for police violence and police- caused homicide in post-colonial countries such as Guyana. Mars applies a contextual approach, grounded in the conflict theoretical perspective, to explain and understand variations in police violence over time, and she extends her study to include the social, political, and legal structure in which such actions are embedded. Her findings support the notion that police violence is a function of decades of coercive state rule under British colonialism, as well as the state's legitimization of violence in police work. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Police brutality|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh95010616|zGuyana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061018-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Police|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85104183 |zGuyana|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061018- 781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 7 Police brutality.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1068571 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Police.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1068398 650 7 Police.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001119 651 7 Guyana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208722 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMars, Joan R., 1954-|tDeadly force, colonialism, and the rule of law.|dWestport, CT : Greenwood Press, ©2002|z0313311048|w(DLC) 2002019547 |w(OCoLC)48876653 830 0 Contributions in comparative colonial studies ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n42008254|vno. 46.|x0163-3813 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=85882|zOnline eBook.
