But in his book, Jernej Mlekuž holds just the opposite. The burek--a pie made of pastry dough filled with various fillings, well-known in the Balkans, Turkey (bürek), and also in the Near East by other names-- whether on the plate or as a cultural artifact, is in fact not that simple. After a brief stroll though its innocent history, before parasitical ideologies had attached themselves to the burek and poisoned its discourses, Mlekuž focuses on the present. In Slovenia, the burek has become a loaded metaphor for the Balkans and immigrants from the republics of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Without the burek it would be equally difficult to consider the jargon of Slovenian youth, the imagined world of Slovenian chauvinism and the rhetorical arsenal of advertising agents when promoting healthy foods. In this analysis therefore, the burek is always what Mlekuž calls the metaburek. It is greasy, Balkan, Slovene, not-Slovene, the greatest, eastern, the best, shit, oriental, unhealthy, plebian, Yugoslav, junk, a cherub (burek spelled backwards is kerub, the Slovene word for cherub). And this metaburek, which is the protagonist of this book, is never a completely pure, innocent, unconditioned burek. It is much more than just a burek. And a word of warning: after consuming this text, the burek will never be the same"--Provided by pubolisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Metaphor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85084283|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zSlovenia.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81035365-781 650 0 Food|xSymbolic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh90005797|zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81035365-781 650 0 Pies|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87007470 |zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81035365-781 650 0 Immigrants|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064517|zSlovenia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n81035365-781|xPublic opinion.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006218 650 0 Nationalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85090150|zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81035365-781 650 0 Popular culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85104904|zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81035365-781 650 0 Political culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh87001689|zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n81035365-781 650 0 Discourse analysis|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85038362|zSlovenia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81035365-781 650 7 Metaphor|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1018286 650 7 Metaphor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1018283 650 7 Food|xSymbolic aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/930637 650 7 Pies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1063903 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 Public opinion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1082785 650 7 Nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033832 650 7 Popular culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1071344 650 7 Political culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069263 650 7 Discourse analysis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 894932 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Slovenia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81035365 |xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2001008851 651 0 Slovenia|xPolitics and government.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91000571 651 7 Slovenia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1212712 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMlekuž, Jernej.|tBurek.|dBudapest : Central European University Press, 2015|w(DLC) 2014046043 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1150668|zOnline eBook.
