Fen drainage projects were supposed to transform hundreds of thousands of acres of wetlands into dry farmland capable of growing grain and other crops, and also reform the sickly, backward fenland inhabitants into civilized, healthy farmers, to the benefit of the entire commonwealth. Fenlanders, however, viewed the drainage as a grave threat to their local landscape, economy, and way of life. At issue were two different understandings of the Fens, what they were and ought to be; the power to define the Fens in the present was the power to determine their future destiny. The drainage projects, and the many conflicts they incited, illustrate the ways in which politics, economics, and ecological thought intersected at a time when attitudes toward both the natural environment and the commonwealth were shifting. Promoted by the crown, endorsed by agricultural improvement advocates, undertaken by English and Dutch projectors, and opposed by fenland commoners, the drainage of the Fens provides a fascinating locus to study the process of state building in early modern England, and the violent popular resistance it sometimes provoked. In exploring the many challenges the English faced in re-conceiving and re-creating their Fens, this book addresses important themes of environmental, political, economic, social, and technological history, and reveals new dimensions of the evolution of early modern England into a modern, unitary, capitalist state"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1558-1603|2fast 648 7 1603-1649|2fast 650 0 Drainage|zEngland|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2008005361|zFens, The|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000729-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Reclamation of land|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85111833|zEngland|zFens, The|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87000729-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Political development|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh91000119|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zEngland|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82068148-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Government, Resistance to|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85056036|zEngland|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n82068148-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Drainage.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/897411 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Reclamation of land.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1091410 650 7 Political development.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1069278 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Government, Resistance to.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/945663 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Fens, The (England)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000729|xHistory|y16th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006122 651 0 Fens, The (England)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000729|xHistory|y17th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006123 651 0 Fens, The (England)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000729|xEnvironmental conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 Fens, The (England)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87000729|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011436 651 0 Great Britain|xPolitics and government|y1558-1603.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056888 651 0 Great Britain|xPolitics and government|y1603-1649.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056890 651 7 England|zThe Fens.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1333622 651 7 England.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1219920 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAsh, Eric H., 1972-|tDraining of the Fens.|dBaltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2017 |z9781421422008|w(DLC) 2016028456|w(OCoLC)961408351 830 0 Johns Hopkins studies in the history of technology.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n42013987 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1393599|zOnline eBook.
