Why Study Border Enactments? -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index 520 "For more than a century, the border cities of Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, have celebrated George Washington's birthday with parades, pageants, and other festivities. This project uses that long-standing tradition as a lens to examine binational relations and cross-border cooperation, especially during times of crisis (e.g., the 1954 flood, currency devaluations, present-day drug violence). It is a work of both ethnography and archival research (as well as a few uncatalogued documents the author received from private collections), and it argues that the tradition of meeting in the middle of the international bridge is more than a goodwill gesture or an exercise in identity-consolidation. Peña maintains the GWB celebration is a repository of bicultural memory, a negotiation platform, a reconciliatory course of action, and even an efficacious mode of border security"--|cProvided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Festivals|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh90003689|zLaredo|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81149495-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Festivals|zMexico|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh94004909|zNuevo Laredo|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82153775-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Political customs and rites|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87004402|zTexas|zLaredo.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81149495-781 650 0 Political customs and rites|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh87004402|zMexico|zNuevo Laredo. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82153775-781 650 0 Festivals|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh90003689|zLaredo|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81149495-781|xInternational cooperation|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006352|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Festivals|zMexico|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh94004909|zNuevo Laredo|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n82153775-781|xInternational cooperation|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006352|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Ethnosociology|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2013001662|zMexican-American Border Region.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85084485-781 650 7 Festivals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/923329 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Political customs and rites.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1069276 650 7 International cooperation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/976857 650 7 Ethnosociology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1896491 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 651 0 Laredo (Tex.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81149495|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007590|zMexico|zNuevo Laredo.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82153775-781 651 7 Texas|zLaredo.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1217217 651 7 Mexico|zNuevo Laredo.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1222612 651 7 North America|zMexican-American Border Region.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239966 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |cOriginal|z9781477321430|z1477321438|z9781477321447 |z1477321446|w(DLC) 2020008799|w(OCoLC)1145087807 830 0 Jack and Doris Smothers series in Texas history, life, and culture.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n98045355 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2713481|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
