The fifth MDG aimed to reduce the maternal mortality rate by 75 per cent between 1990 and 2015, but by the target date, the goal had not been reached. In The Limits of Trust Lisa Nicole Mills investigates the reasons why Mexico in particular did not meet its objective. Focusing on the states of Guerrero, Chiapas, and Oaxaca, where maternal mortality rates are the highest in the country, Mills looks into how MDG 5 has been implemented in Mexico, how it has been experienced by individuals and groups, what obstacles have been encountered, and what factors have facilitated improvements in maternal health. Using data gathered from interviews with NGOs, government officials, and health care workers, the book argues that government and feminist NGO efforts to build trust in the health care system have fallen short because of systemic failures to protect women's rights and enhance the quality of health care. In Mexico a woman's risk of dying from a pregnancy-related complication is five times higher than in developed countries. The Limits of Trust explores the realities of implementing maternal health initiatives on the ground in rural, remote, and impoverished areas, and the steps that can be taken to successfully combat maternal mortality. 588 0 Vendor-supplied metadata. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Millennium Development Goals.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n2009182478 610 27 Millennium Development Goals.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1787265 650 0 Maternal health services|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85082102|zMexico.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81013960-781 650 0 Pregnant women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106300|xServices for|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2001008792|zMexico.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81013960-781 650 0 Pregnant women|xHealth and hygiene|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008109925|zMexico.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81013960-781 650 0 Pregnancy|xComplications|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85106287|zMexico|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81013960-781|xPrevention.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002416 650 0 Mothers|xMortality|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85087530|zMexico|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81013960-781|xPrevention.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002416 650 0 Medical policy|zMexico.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010101291 650 7 Maternal health services.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1011995 650 7 Pregnant women|xServices for.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1075220 650 7 Pregnant women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1075191 650 7 Pregnant women|xHealth and hygiene.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1075208 650 7 Pregnancy|xComplications.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1075106 650 7 Mothers|xMortality.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1026971 650 7 Medical policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1014505 650 7 Mothers.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001021 651 2 Mexico.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D008800 651 7 Mexico.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1211700 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|z0773551085|z9780773551084 |w(OCoLC)985674397 830 0 McGill-Queen's studies in gender, sexuality, and social justice in the global south ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2017085181|v3. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1651931|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
