Using Philadelphia as a case study, Michael Meranze interprets the evolving system of criminal punishment as a microcosm of social tensions that characterized the early American republic. 520 8 Laboratories of Virtue demonstrates the ramifications of the history of punishment for the struggles to define a new revolution order. By focusing attention on the system of public penal labor that developed in the 1780s, Meranze effectively links penal reform to the development of republican principles in the Revolutionary era. In addition, Meranze argues, the emergence of reformative incarceration was a crucial symptom of the crises of the Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary public spheres. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Punishment|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109115|zPennsylvania|zPhiladelphia|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n78095520-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Prisons|zPennsylvania|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85107015|zPhiladelphia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095520-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Prison reformers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85106940|zPennsylvania|zPhiladelphia|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n78095520-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Punishment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1084107 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Prisons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1077326 650 7 Prison reformers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1077070 651 7 Pennsylvania|zPhiladelphia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1204170 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMeranze, Michael.|tLaboratories of virtue|z0807822779|w(DLC) 95045117|w(OCoLC)33357178 830 0 Published for the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, Williamsburg, Virginia. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=965163|zOnline eBook.
