Shortly after the American Revolution, people in the United States increasingly encountered an expanded array of religious options. Evangelical Protestants began an effort to convert Americans, while developing new practices that emphasized conversion as an immediate choice. Their missionary effort extended to Native American nations such as the Cherokee in the Southeast, who received Christianity on their own terms. Enslaved and newly freed African Americans likewise created a variety of Christian conversion that was centered on religious hope and eschatological expectation. Mormons, drawing on earlier Protestant practices and beliefs, enthusiastically proselytized for a new tradition that emphasized individual choice and free will. By uncovering the way that religious identity is structured as an obligatory decision, this book explains why Americans change their religions so much, and why the United States is both highly religious in terms of religious affiliation and very secular in the sense that no religion is an unquestioned default.--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Conversion|xChristianity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99003156|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Proselytizing|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99003026|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Religious pluralism|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010110636|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Christianity and other religions|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85025250|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 7 Conversion|xChristianity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/877229 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/860740 650 7 Proselytizing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1079381 650 7 Religious pluralism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1094200 650 7 Christianity and other religions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/859685 651 0 United States|xChurch history.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85139926 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1411629 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMullen, Lincoln A., 1984-|tChance of salvation.|dCambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2017|z9780674975620|w(DLC) 2017003962 |w(OCoLC)994144474 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1561262|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
