Out- of-town radicals preached armed revolution. Students took to the streets and fought police and National Guardsmen. Firebombs were planted in lecture halls while explosions rocked a federal building on one side of town and a recruiting office on the other. Across the state, the powers-that-be expressed shock that such events could take place at Illinois's esteemed, conservative, flagship university--how could it happen here, of all places? Positioning the events in the context of their time, Michael Metz delves into the lives and actions of activists at the center of the drama. A participant himself, Metz draws on interviews, archives, and newspaper records to show a movement born in demands for free speech, inspired by a movement for civil rights, and driven to the edge by a seemingly never-ending war. If the sudden burst of irrational violence baffled parents, administrators, and legislators, it seemed inevitable to students after years of official intransigence and disregard. Metz portrays campus protesters not as angry, militant extremists but as youthful citizens deeply engaged with grave moral issues, embodying the idealism, naiveté and courage of a minority of a generation"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79049103|xStudents|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005819|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002011434|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 610 20 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79049103|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 610 27 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/532271 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Student movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85129276|zIllinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79053746-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Protest movements|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh91005953|zIllinois|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79053746-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Political participation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069386 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Student movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1135954 650 7 Protest movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1079826 651 7 Illinois.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205143 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|tRadicals in the heartland|dUrbana : University of Illinois Press, [2019]|z9780252042416 (hardback : alk. paper)|w(DLC) 2018044850 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2098316|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
