For example the word raven is arbitrary in that it does not resemble a raven; cuckoo, however, is sound -symbolic in that it resembles the bird's call. In Sounds Like Life, Janis Nuckolls studies the occurrence of sound-symbolic words in Pastaza Quechua (a dialect of Quechua), which is spoken in eastern Ecuador. The use of sound-symbolic words is much more prevalent in Pastaza Quechua than in any other language, and they symbolize a wider range. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Quechua language|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109790|xOnomatopoeic words.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006871 650 0 Quechua language|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109790|xAspect.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99002418 650 0 Quechua language|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85109790|zEcuador|zPastaza (Province)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85353398-781 650 7 Quechua language.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1085584 651 7 Ecuador|zPastaza (Province)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1333032 653 0 Language 653 0 South America 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNuckolls, Janis B.|tSounds like life. |dNew York : Oxford University Press, 1996|w(DLC) 94048118 830 0 Oxford studies in anthropological linguistics ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94101163|v2. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=143870|zOnline eBook.
