It explores the role of the state in provisioning the urban population, particularly workers, with food, and in feeding the Red army; the medicalization of hunger; hunger in blockaded Leningrad; and civilian mortality from hunger and malnutrition in other home front industrial regions. New research reported here challenges and complicates many of the narratives and counter-narratives about the war. The authors engage such difficult subjects as starvation mortality, bitterness over privation and inequalities in provisioning, and conflicts among state organizations. At the same time, they recognize the considerable role played by the Soviet state in organizing supplies of food to adequately support the military effort and defense production, and in developing policies that promoted social stability amid upheaval. The book makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the Soviet population's experience of World War II as well as to studies of war and famine"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 World War|d(1939-1945)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1180924 648 7 1917-1945|2fast 650 0 Food supply|zSoviet Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008104001|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 World War, 1939-1945|xFood supply|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85148413|zSoviet Union.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126312-781 650 0 Rationing|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85111523|zSoviet Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80126312-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Hunger|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85063084 |zSoviet Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80126312-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Starvation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85127471|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Nutrition policy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85093473|zSoviet Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80126312-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Food supply|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85050339|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zSoviet Union|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126312-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 World War, 1939-1945|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85148501|zSoviet Union.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126312-781 650 0 War and society|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85145155|zSoviet Union|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80126312-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Food supply.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/931196 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Rationing.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1090287 650 7 Hunger.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/964089 650 7 Starvation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1131740 650 7 Nutrition policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1042296 650 7 Food supply|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/931219 650 7 War and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1170447 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 651 0 Soviet Union|xSocial conditions|y1917-1945.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97002396 651 7 Soviet Union.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210281 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 Goldman, Wendy Z.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n92122508|eeditor. 700 1 Filtzer, Donald A.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79142982|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tHunger and war|z9780253017086|w(DLC) 2014048990|w(OCoLC)892878733 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=988230|zOnline eBook.
