The book builds upon anthropology's qualitative approach to personhood, power and space to rethink the premises and consequences of economic development campaigns in China's multiethnic northwestern province of Qinghai. Charlene Makley considers Tibetans' encounters with development projects as first and foremost a historically situated interpretive politics, in which people negotiate the presence or absence of moral and authoritative persons and their associated jurisdictions and powers. Because most Tibetans believe the active presence of deities and other invisible beings has been the ground of power, causation, and fertile or fortunate landscapes, Makley also takes divine beings seriously, refusing to relegate them to a separate, less consequential, "religious" or "premodern" world. The Battle for Fortune, therefore challenges readers to grasp the unique reality of Tibetans' values and fears in the face of their marginalization in China. Makley uses this approach to encourage a more multidimensional and dynamic understanding of state-local relations than mainstream accounts of development and unrest that portray Tibet and China as a kind of yin-and-yang pair for models of statehood and development in a new global order. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on May 09, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 2000-2099|2fast 650 0 Tibetans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85135232|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|zReb-goṅ Gser-mo-ljoṅs|xSocial conditions |y21st century. 650 0 Tibetans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85135232|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|zReb-goṅ Gser-mo-ljoṅs|xEconomic conditions |y21st century. 650 7 Tibetans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1150682 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 651 0 Reb-gong Gser-mo-ljongs (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2004028959|xEthnic relations.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005646 651 0 Reb-gong Gser-mo-ljongs (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2004028959|xPolitics and government |y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002011444 651 7 China|zReb-gong Gser-mo-ljongs.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1303619 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMakley, Charlene E., 1964-|tBattle for fortune.|dIthaca : Cornell University Press, 2018 |z9781501719646|w(DLC) 2017039231 830 0 Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2003077547 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1615428|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
