Bringing together scholarly perspectives from around the world and across disciplines, the authors explore how 'spiritualities' express themselves through and with media -- from television to Internet, from fashion to art murals -- as socially transforming voices and practices. The very fluidity of the meaning of spirituality is part of its appeal: it can service as easily as a reference to a perceived common essence of humanness as it can work to legitimate market-based practices. While the involvement of spiritual life with social transformation is certainly not peculiar to contemporary societies, what has changed is the upsurge of media in these matters. In the specific case of religion, globalization has unleashed a cascade of unexpected and unpredictable implications, many of which are consequences of the media. The authors here show ways in which media and spiritualities are engaged around the world in efforts to restructure paradigms, institutions, beliefs and practices to affect social change."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Mass media|xReligious aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85081872 650 0 Mass media in religion.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85081900 650 0 Religions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85112599|xInfluence.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002005444 650 0 Mass media|xInfluence.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85081866 650 0 Social change.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123918 650 7 Mass media|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1011289 650 7 Mass media in religion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1011408 650 7 Religions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1093898 650 7 Mass media|xInfluence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1011251 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Hoover, Stewart M.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n81035980 700 1 Emerich, Monica.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2010030519 776 08 |iPrint version:|tMedia, spiritualities and social change. |dLondon ; New York : Continuum, ©2011|z9781441145550 |w(DLC) 2010020329|w(OCoLC)496962262 830 0 Continuum religious studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2008111049 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=350279|zOnline eBook.
