In contrast to the other famous merchant family of the period, the Medici of Florence, however, no English -language work on them has been available until now. The Fuggers of Augsburg offers a concise and engaging overview that builds on the latest scholarly literature and the author's own work on sixteenth-century merchant capitalism. Mark Häberlein traces the history of the family from the weaver Hans Fugger's immigration to the imperial city of Augsburg in 1367 to the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648. Because the Fuggers' extensive business activities involved long-distance trade, mining, state finance, and overseas ventures, the family exemplifies the meanings of globalization at the beginning of the modern age. The book also covers the political, social, and cultural roles of the Fuggers: their patronage of Renaissance artists, the founding of the largest social housing project of its time, their support of Catholicism in a city that largely turned Protestant during the Reformation, and their rise from urban merchants to imperial counts and feudal lords. Häberlein argues that the Fuggers organized their social rise in a way that allowed them to be merchants and feudal landholders, burghers and noblemen at the same time. Their story therefore provides a window on social mobility, cultural patronage, religion, and values during the Renaissance and the Reformation. 546 Translated from German. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 14 Fugger family. 600 30 Fugger family.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052237 600 37 Fugger family.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/212530 648 7 To 1500|2fast 648 7 To 1599|2fast 650 0 Renaissance|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010110734|zAugsburg.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n50073906-781 650 0 Capitalists and financiers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85019964|zGermany|zAugsburg|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50073906-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Wealth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85145828 |zGermany|zAugsburg|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n50073906-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Honor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061884 |zGermany|zAugsburg|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n50073906-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Renaissance.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1094518 650 7 Capitalists and financiers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/846463 650 7 Wealth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1172973 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Honor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/960005 650 7 Commerce.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/869279 651 0 Augsburg (Germany)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n50073906|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 0 Augsburg (Germany)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n50073906|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 0 Augsburg (Germany)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n50073906|xEconomic conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005736 651 0 Europe|xCommerce|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008114966|yTo 1500.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012483 651 7 Germany|zAugsburg.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1202992 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780813932446|z0813932440|w(DLC) 2011028911 830 0 Studies in early modern German history.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n93096886 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=452278|zOnline eBook.
