Performer Moderators: Dr. Mary L. Poteau-Tralie; Lawrence P. Johnson, Associate Dean of Students and John Brown; introduction by: Linda Materna, Director of the Them Program.
Summary An unfortunate incident of racist remarks brings together this forum to help promote greater understanding of multiculturalism in the campus. In her introduction Professor Linda Materna outlines 3 goals: 1- Creating a community through dialogue; 2- Sharing different culture perspectives: personal stories; 3- Identifying solutions for the future. The questions asked to the panelists are "How do you all define to be American?", " Have you experienced discrimination, prejudice or stereotyping?", "How can you find solutions to stereotyping in the campus?. Telling their own stories and experiences within and outside the country students discuss various social issues such as cultural diversity, racism, prejudice and unjustified fear and anger . Panelists also touch upon such broader topics as individualism versus community in the lives of Americans and materialism as a positive or negative factor in any society.
