After analysing how Greek city festivals developed in the first two Imperial centuries, it concentrates on the major Roman festivals that were adopted in the Eastern cities and traces their history up to the time of Justinian and beyond. It addresses several key questions for the religious history of later antiquity : who were the actors behind these adoptions? How did the closed religious communities, Jews and pre-Constantinian Christians, articulate their resistance? How did these festivals change when the empire converted to Christianity? Why did emperors not yield to the long- standing pressure of the Church to abolish them? And finally, how did these very popular festivals - despite their pagan tradition - influence the form of the newly developed Christian liturgy? 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 27 Centrum för Invandringsforskning|gStockholm |bForskningsgruppen för Studier av Etniska Relationer, Social Kognition och Tvärkulturell Psykologi.|2gnd 648 7 146 B.C.-476 A.D.|2fast 650 0 Festivals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047932|zRome.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79039816-781 650 0 Festivals|zGreece.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh91006231 650 0 Rites and ceremonies|zRome.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010111080 650 0 Rites and ceremonies|zGreece.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85114216 650 7 Festivals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/923329 650 7 Rites and ceremonies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1098216 650 7 BODY, MIND & SPIRIT|xSpirituality|xPaganism & Neo- Paganism.|2bisacsh 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 RELIGION|xAntiquities & Archaeology.|2bisacsh 651 0 Rome|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010111081 651 0 Rome|xHistory|yEmpire, 30 B.C.-476 A.D.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85115128 651 0 Greece|xHistory|y146 B.C.-323 A.D.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85057092 651 7 Greece.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208380 651 7 Rome (Empire)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204885 651 7 Griechenland|gAltertum.|2gnd 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGraf, Fritz.|tRoman festivals in the Greek East|z9781107092112|w(DLC) 2015015126 |w(OCoLC)916407980 830 0 Greek culture in the Roman world.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2005068643 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1093100|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
