From the tenor of most discussions, however, it would be easy to conclude that the idea of marriage between two people of the same sex is a uniquely contemporary phenomenon. Not so, argues Gary Ferguson in this remarkable book about a same-sex wedding ceremony in sixteenth-century Rome. The case in question involved a group of mostly Spanish and Portuguese men, arrested and executed in Rome in 1578, said to have performed same-sex wedding ceremonies in one of the city's major churches. We know about the incident from a number of sources, including the travel journal of the French essayist Michel de Montaigne. Several substantial fragments of the transcript of the men's trial have also survived, along with copies of their wills. Making use of all these documents, Ferguson brings the story to life in striking detail. He reveals not only the names of the men but also where they lived, how they were employed, and who their friends were. In particular, he unearths a surprising amount of detail about the men's sex lives, and how others responded to this information, which allows him to explore attitudes toward marriage, sex, and gender at the time. Emphasizing the instability of marriage in premodern Europe, Ferguson argues that same-sex unions should be considered part of the institution's complex and contested history"--Provided by publisher 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Same-sex marriage|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh92003901|zRome.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79039816-781 650 0 Same-sex marriage|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh92003901|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045631-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Gay men|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85061798|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045631-781|xAttitudes.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006216 650 0 Homophobia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh88006552|zEurope|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85045631-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Same-sex marriage.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1104555 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Gay men.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/939117 650 7 Homophobia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/959727 650 7 Gay men|xAttitudes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 939119 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xPublic Policy|xCultural Policy. |2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xCultural.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xPopular Culture.|2bisacsh 650 7 RELIGION|xChristian Church|xHistory.|2bisacsh 650 7 Same-sex marriage.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000504 650 7 Gay men.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000506 650 7 Homophobia.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000646 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 651 7 Rome (Empire)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204885 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|tSame-sex marriage in Renaissance Rome |dIthaca ; Cornell University Press, 2016.|z9781501702372 |w(DLC) 2016012404 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1288986|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
