Weinberg features two case studies where groups engage in seemingly violent acts: competitive mixed martial arts and sexual sadomasochism. These activities are similar in that consenting to injury is central to the activity, and participants of both activities have to engage in a form of social decriminalization, leveraging the legal authority imbued in the language of consent as a way to render their activities legally and socially tolerable. Yet, these activities are treated differently under criminal battery law. Using interviews with participants and ethnographic observation, Weinberg argues that where law authorizes a person's consent to an activity, consent is not meaningfully regulated or constructed by the participants themselves. In contrast, where law prohibits a person's consent to an activity, participants actively construct and regulate consent. This difference demonstrates that law can make consent less consensual. Synthesizing criminal law and ethnography, Consensual Violence is a fascinating account of how consent gets created and carried out among participants and lays the groundwork for a sociology of consent and a more sociological understanding of processes of decriminalization."--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on May 31, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Consent (Law)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85031244|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Sadomasochism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85120740|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Sadomasochism|xLaw and legislation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2006007214|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Mixed martial arts|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2007000029|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Mixed martial arts|xLaw and legislation|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2019102651|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001484 650 0 Violence|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85143514|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|vCase studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 0 Decriminalization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85036356|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|vCase studies.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001484 650 7 Consent (Law)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/875478 650 7 Sadomasochism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1103309 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 650 7 Sadomasochism|xLaw and legislation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1765910 650 7 Mixed martial arts.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1741903 650 7 Mixed martial arts|xLaw and legislation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2015011 650 7 Violence|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1167262 650 7 Violence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1167224 650 7 Decriminalization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 889439 650 7 SM.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000036 650 7 Decriminalization.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000339 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Case studies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423765 655 7 Case studies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2017026140 710 2 University of California (System).|bRegents,|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85088322|esponsoring body. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWeinberg, Jill D.|tConsensual violence. |dOakland, California : University of California Press, [2016]|z9780520290655|w(DLC) 2015048378 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1132440|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
