Despite declining stocks worldwide and increasing health risks, artisanal whaling remains a popular practice tied to nature's rhythms. The Wake of the Whale presents the art, history, and purpose of whaling in these different cultures and climates, and describes what the future of these societies might look like as modern realities take hold. Sightings of pilot whales in the frigid Nordic waters have drawn residents of the Faroe Islands to their boats and beaches for nearly a thousand years. Down in the tropics, around the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, artisanal whaling is a younger trade, shaped by the legacies of slavery and colonialism but no less important to the local population. Each culture, Russell Fielding shows, has developed a distinct approach to whaling that preserves key traditions while adapting to threats of scarcity, the requirements of regulation, and a growing awareness of the humane treatment of animals. Yet these strategies struggle to account for the risks of regularly eating meat contaminated with methylmercury and other environmental pollutants introduced from abroad. Fielding considers how these and other factors may change whaling cultures forever, perhaps even bringing an end to this way of life. --|cProvided by publisher. 546 In English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Whaling|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146357|zSaint Vincent and the Grenadines.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82123205-781 650 0 Whaling|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146357|zFaroe Islands.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79035921-781 650 0 Whaling|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146357|xEnvironmental aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005383 650 0 Whaling|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146357|xHealth aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005598 650 0 Hunting and gathering societies|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85063134|zSaint Vincent and the Grenadines.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82123205-781 650 0 Hunting and gathering societies|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85063134|zFaroe Islands.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79035921-781 650 0 Marine resources conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85081260|zSaint Vincent and the Grenadines.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82123205-781 650 0 Marine resources conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85081260|zFaroe Islands.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79035921-781 650 7 Whaling.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174284 650 7 Whaling|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1174286 650 7 Hunting and gathering societies.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/964206 650 7 Marine resources conservation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1009907 650 7 TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING|xAgriculture|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Humanökologie.|2gnd 650 7 Vergleichende Forschung.|2gnd 650 7 Walfänger.|2gnd 650 7 Walfang.|2gnd 650 7 Grindwal.|2gnd 650 7 Kulturerbe.|2gnd 650 7 Umweltverschmutzung.|2gnd 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural.|2bisacsh 651 7 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1221750 651 7 Faroe Islands.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204843 651 7 Atlantischer Ozean|zNord.|2gnd 651 7 Karibik.|2gnd 651 7 Färöer.|2gnd 651 7 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.|2gnd 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFielding, Russell, 1977-|tWake of the whale.|dCambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2018|z9780674986374|w(DLC) 2018009236 |w(OCoLC)1023057118 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1868517|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
