Focusing on three youth styles - preppies, hip hop fans, and nerds - Bucholtz shows how white youth use a wealth of linguistic resources, from social labels to slang, from Valley Girl speech to African American English, to position themselves in the school's racialized social order. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a multiracial urban California high school, the book also demonstrates how European American teenagers talk about race when discussing interracial friendship and difference, narrating racialized fear and conflict, and negotiating their own ethnoracial classification. The first book to use techniques of linguistic analysis to examine the construction of diverse white identities, it will be welcomed by researchers and students in linguistics, anthropology, ethnic studies and education. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Teenagers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh87006824|zCalifornia|zSan Francisco Bay Area|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117096-781|xLanguage. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005366 650 0 Youth, White|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2010012315|zCalifornia|zSan Francisco Bay Area|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117096-781|xLanguage. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005366 650 0 Language and culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85074514|zCalifornia|zSan Francisco Bay Area. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117096-781 650 0 White people|xRace identity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh98006796|zCalifornia|zSan Francisco Bay Area.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85117096-781 650 7 Teenagers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1145551 650 7 Youth, White.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1763086 650 7 Language and culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 992135 650 7 White people|xRace identity.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1174825 651 7 California|zSan Francisco Bay Area.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1242397 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBucholtz, Mary, 1966-|tWhite kids. |dCambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2011 |z9780521871495|w(DLC) 2011280863|w(OCoLC)700394237 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=344710|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
