Mawdsley examines the untold story of the first effort to control polio prior to the development of the Salk vaccine. In the early 1950s, Dr. William McD. Hammon and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis launched a pioneering medical experiment on a previously untried scale. Conducted on over 55,000 healthy children in Texas, Utah, Iowa, and Nebraska, this landmark study attempted to assess the safety and effectiveness of a blood component, 'gamma globulin' (which is derived by a process known as 'fractionation') to prevent paralytic polio. Although the study was condemned by many prominent health professionals, harbored potential risks, and returned dubious results, it was perceived as a triumph and used to justify a national immunization program from 1953 to 1954"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Hammon, William McD.|q(William McDowell),|d1904-1989. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no99056498 600 17 Hammon, William McD.|q(William McDowell),|d1904-1989. |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1761363 610 20 National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n83001854|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 27 National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/577976 648 7 20th century|2fast 650 0 Science|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85118553|xEconomic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005484|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Science|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85118585|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Clinical trials|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009120434|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Children|xDiseases|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85023434|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xPrevention|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99002416|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 Gamma globulins|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85052979|xResearch|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002006576|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Poliomyelitis|xResearch|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85104272|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Poliomyelitis|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85104268|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n78095330-781|xPrevention|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002416|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Science|xEconomic aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1108217 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 Science|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1108360 650 7 Clinical trials.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 864429 650 7 Children|xDiseases.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 854907 650 7 Gamma globulins.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 937593 650 7 Research.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1095153 650 7 Poliomyelitis|xResearch.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1068842 650 7 Poliomyelitis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1068830 650 7 Children.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000255 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMawdsley, Stephen E.|tSelling science. |dNew Brunswick, New Jersey : Rutgers University Press, 2016|z9780813574394|z0813574390|w(DLC) 2015037355 |w(OCoLC)927618771 830 0 Critical issues in health and medicine.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2005183339 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1257351|zOnline eBook.
