Lloyd. 520 8 How did ancient scientific and knowledge-ordering writers make their work authoritative? This book answers that question for a wide range of ancient disciplines, from mathematics, medicine, architecture and agriculture, through to law, historiography and philosophy - focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on the literature of the Roman Empire. It draws attention to habits that these different fields had in common, while also showing how individual texts and authors manipulated standard techniques of self-authorisation in distinctive ways. It stresses the importance of competitive and assertive styles of self-presentation, and also examines some of the pressures that pulled in the opposite direction by looking at authors who chose to acknowledge the limitations of their own knowledge or resisted close identification with narrow versions of expert identity. A final chapter by Sir Geoffrey Lloyd offers a comparative account of scientific authority and expertise in ancient Chinese, Indian and Mesopotamian culture. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (Cambridge, viewed February 03, 2017). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Science, Ancient.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85118612 650 0 Science|zGreece|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111296 650 7 Science, Ancient.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1108800 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 SCIENCE|xHistory.|2bisacsh 651 7 Greece.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208380 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 König, Jason,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2005054523|eeditor. 700 1 Woolf, Greg,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n93057891|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tAuthority and expertise in ancient scientific culture.|dCambridge : Cambridge University Press, [2017]|z9781107060067|w(DLC) 2016023672 |w(OCoLC)951465370 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1433582|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
