Once they were published, his work had a remarkable impact on the evolution of seventeenth-century thought. However, as his identity was unknown, divergent interpretations of their meaning quickly sprang up. Seventeenth-century readers understood him as an anti-Aristotelian thinker and as a precursor of Descartes. Twentieth-century historians depicted him as an atomist, natural scientist and even as a chemist. And yet, when Gorlaeus died, he was a beginning student in theology. His thought must in fact be placed at the intersection between philosophy, the nascent natural sciences, and theology. The aim of this book is to shed light on Gorlaeus' family circumstances, his education at Franeker and Leiden, and on the virulent Arminian crisis which provided the context within which his work was written. It also attempts to define Gorlaeus' place in the history of Dutch philosophy and to assess the influence that it exercised in the evolution of philosophy and science, and notably in early Cartesian circles."--Page 4 of cover. 546 En. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 Project Muse |bProject Muse Open Access 600 10 Gorlaeus, David,|d1591-1612.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/nb2012014927 600 17 Gorlaeus, David,|d1591-1612.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1951119 650 0 Atomism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85009328 650 0 Science|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85118570 650 0 Philosophy|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85100850 650 0 Physics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85101653|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 6 Atomisme. 650 6 Sciences|xHistoire. 650 6 Philosophie|xHistoire. 650 6 Physique|xHistoire. 650 7 Physics|xGeneral.|2hilcc 650 7 Physical Sciences & Mathematics.|2hilcc 650 7 Physics.|2hilcc 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 Physics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1063025 650 7 Philosophy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1060777 650 7 Atomism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/820644 650 7 HISTORY|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xSocial History.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xReference.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xEssays.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xCivilization.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xSociology|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xRegional Studies.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Regional and national history.|2bicssc 650 7 History.|2bicssc 650 7 Humanities.|2bicssc 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 17 Natuurwetenschappen.|2gtt 650 17 Natuurfilosofie.|2gtt 651 7 Nederland.|2gtt 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Electronic books. .|2local 710 2 Project Muse,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174|edistributor. 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 830 0 History of science and scholarship in the Netherlands. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2003008717|x1569- 3481 ;|vvol. 13. 856 40 |zOnline eBook.
