Snow"--Cover. 504 Includes bibliographical references (pages 277-300) and index. 505 0 Characterizing the three cultures -- The natural sciences -- Social sciences 1 -- Social sciences 2 -- The humanities -- Current tensions. 520 In 1959 C.P. Snow delivered his now-famous Rede Lecture, 'The Two Cultures, ' a reflection on the academy based on the premise that intellectual life was divided into two cultures: the arts and humanities on one side and science on the other. Since then, a third culture, generally termed 'social science' and comprised of fields such as sociology, political science, economics, and psychology, has emerged. Jerome Kagan's book describes the assumptions, vocabulary, and contributions of each of these cultures and argues that the meanings of many of the concepts used by each culture are unique to it and do not apply to the others because the source of evidence for the term is special. The text summarizes the contributions of the social sciences and humanities to our understanding of human nature and questions the popular belief that biological processes are the main determinant of variation in human behavior.--Publisher description. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 2000-2099|2fast 650 0 Science and the humanities|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85118626|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 650 0 Biology|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007102005|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 650 0 Social sciences|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85124010|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 650 0 Humanities|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009126661|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 650 0 Science|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85118570|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012478 650 7 Science and the humanities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1108559 650 7 Biology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/832383 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Social sciences.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122877 650 7 Humanities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/963588 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 773 0 |tCambridge Books online 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKagan, Jerome.|tThree cultures. |dCambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge Univ.
