Christopher M. Graney challenges the long-standing ideas that opponents of the heliocentric ideas of Copernicus and Galileo were primarily motivated by religion or devotion to an outdated intellectual tradition, and that they were in continual retreat in the face of telescopic discoveries. Graney calls on newly translated works by anti-Copernican writers of the time to demonstrate that science, not religion, played an important, and arguably predominant, role in the opposition to the Copernican system. Anti-Copernicans, building on the work of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, were in fact able to build an increasingly strong scientific case against the heliocentric system at least through the middle of the seventeenth century, several decades after the advent of the telescope. The scientific case reached its apogee, Graney argues, in the 1651 New Almagest of the Italian Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, who used detailed telescopic observations of stars to construct a powerful scientific argument against Copernicus. Setting Aside All Authority includes the first English translation of Monsignor Francesco Ingoli's essay to Galileo (disputing the Copernican system on the eve of the Inquisition's condemnation of it in 1616) and excerpts from Riccioli's reports regarding his experiments with falling bodies; 'Christopher M. Graney's Setting Aside All Authority makes a fine contribution to the history of science and especially the history of astronomy. The case Graney presents for the rationality of denying Copernicanism, as late as the mid-seventeenth century, is cogent, and he presents a good deal of novel historical material that urges a reevaluation of a major figure--Riccioli. The book will interest not only historians but also philosophers of science, and scientists in the relevant specialties (astronomy, physics) together with their students at both the undergraduate and graduate level'--Peter Barker, University of Oklahoma"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Copernicus, Nicolaus,|d1473-1543.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79039943 600 10 Riccioli, Giovanni Battista,|d1598-1671.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88608867 600 17 Copernicus, Nicolaus,|d1473-1543.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/33633 600 17 Riccioli, Giovanni Battista,|d1598-1671.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/223231 648 7 17th century|2fast 648 7 1600-1699|2fast 650 0 Science|zItaly|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111337|y17th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012473 650 0 Astronomy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85009003|zItaly|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79021783-781|xHistory|y17th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006123 650 0 Jesuit scientists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh98004759|zItaly|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79021783-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Astronomers|zItaly|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007101542 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Astronomy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/819673 650 7 Jesuit scientists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 982370 650 7 Astronomers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/819629 651 7 Italy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204565 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGraney, Christopher M., 1966-|tSetting aside all authority.|dNotre Dame, Indiana : University of Notre Dame Press, 2015|w(DLC) 2014047949 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1239171|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
