From an anthropological perspective, this book provides an introduction into the complex subject of conservation policies that cannot be addressed without recognising the encompassing relationship between discursive, political, economic, social and ecological facets. By facing these interdependencies across global, national and local dynamics, it draws on an ethnographic case study among Maya-Q'eqchi' communities living in the margins of protected areas in Guatemala. In documenting the cultural aspects of landscape, the study explores the coherence of diverse expressions of indigenous knowledge. It intends to remind of cultural values and beliefs closely tied to subsistence activities and ritual practices that define local perceptions of the natural environment. The basic idea is to illustrate that there are different ways of knowing and reasoning, seeing and endowing the world with meaning, which include visible material and invisible interpretative understandings. These tend to be underestimated issues in international debates and may provide an alternative approach upon which conservation initiatives responsive to the needs of the humans involved should be based on. 588 0 Print version record. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Landscape assessment|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85074407|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Ethnology|zGuatemala|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87006637|zAlta Verapaz.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Protected areas|zGuatemala|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2005002328|zAlta Verapaz.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Human ecology|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85062856|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Kekchi Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85071872|xScience|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007934|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Kekchi Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85071872|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 0 Traditional ecological knowledge|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2003006652|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80138133- 781 650 0 Biodiversity conservation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh87005570|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00002758|zGuatemala|zAlta Verapaz. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80138133-781 650 7 Landscape assessment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 991858 650 7 Ethnology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916106 650 7 Protected areas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1079611 650 7 Human ecology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/962941 650 7 Kekchi Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/986688 650 7 Traditional ecological knowledge.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1153965 650 7 Biodiversity conservation|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1429886 650 7 Biodiversity conservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1429861 651 7 Guatemala|zAlta Verapaz.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1210502 651 7 Guatemala.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205154 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Dictionaries.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026086 655 7 Dictionaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423826 776 08 |iPrint version:|z1931968802|z9781931968805 830 0 Göttinger Beiträge zur Ethnologie ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2008114903|vv. 2. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=493292|zOnline eBook.
