It reveals much about the intersection in Russian culture of attitudes towards the meaning and significance of science, as well as about the rise of a Russian national identity, of which Lomonosov became an outstanding symbol. Idealized depictions of Lomonosov were employed by Russian scientists, historians, and poets, among others, in efforts to affirm to their countrymen and to the state the pragmatic advantages of science to a modernizing nation. In setting forth this assumption, Usitalo notes that no sharply drawn division can be upheld between the utilization of the myth of Lomonosov during the Soviet period of Russian history and that which characterized earlier views. The main elements that formed the mythology were laid down in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; Soviet scholars simply added more exaggerated layers to existing representations -- |cProvided by Publisher. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed by Knowledge Unlatched under a Creative Commons license|uhttps://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode 588 Description based on print version record; resource not viewed. 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 600 10 Lomonosov, Mikhail Vasilʹevich,|d1711-1765.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80060716 600 17 Lomonosov, Mikhail Vasilʹevich,|d1711-1765.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/55038 600 17 Lomonosov, Michail Vasilʹevič|d1711-1765.|2gnd 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Authors, Russian|y18th century|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009116337 650 0 Enlightenment|zRussia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009125037 650 0 Russian literature|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85115988 650 0 Science|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85118553|zRussia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80001203-781|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012474 650 7 Authors, Russian.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 822302 650 7 Enlightenment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 650 7 Russian literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1102312 650 7 Science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1108176 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862898 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY|xScience & Technology.|2bisacsh 650 7 SCIENCE|xHistory.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zEurope|xRussia & the Former Soviet Union. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|xRussia & the Former Soviet Union.|2bisacsh 650 7 Rezeption.|2gnd 650 7 Kulturhistoria.|2sao 650 7 Intellektuellt liv.|2sao 651 0 Russia|xCivilization|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh92004175 651 7 Russia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207312 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 700 1 Marker, Gary,|d1948-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n84122814|eseries editor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tThe invention of Mikhail Lomonosov |dBrighton, MA : Academic Studies Press, 2013. |z9781618111739 (hardback)|w(DLC) 2013404724 830 0 Imperial encounters in Russian history.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014019000 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt1zxsj87 |zOnline ebook.
