These capabilities provide the department with many opportunities to promote a variety of the interests of the United States and its allies in a rapidly changing world wherein S & T are important drivers of economic development at home and abroad and help ensure international security. This report assesses and makes recommendations concerning the changing environment for the conduct of diplomacy in the years ahead, with a focus on the role of S & T in the development and implementation of U.S. policies and programs. According to this report, prompt steps by the department's leadership are essential to ensure adequate comprehension of the importance of S & T-related developments throughout the world and to incorporate this understanding within the nation's foreign policy for the 21st century. This report also urges the adoption by the department of a broader whole-of-society approach in carrying out its responsibilities at home and abroad - extending beyond traditional interagency coordination and the narrow band of current external partners to include foundations, universities, research centers, and other groups who are extending their international reach. --Publisher description. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|bDepartment of State.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80126198 610 17 United States.|bDepartment of State.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1802976 650 0 Science and international relations|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh92003467|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Technology and international relations|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85133181|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Diplomatic and consular service, American.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140008 650 7 Science and international relations.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1759575 650 7 Technology and international relations.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1758775 650 7 Diplomatic and consular service, American.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/894209 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 650 7 Foreign relations administration.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/931871 651 0 United States|xForeign relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140058 651 0 United States|xForeign relations administration.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140116 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 710 2 National Research Council (U.S.).|bDevelopment, Security, and Cooperation,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2002065660|eissuing body. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1005070|zOnline eBook.
