The chapters, covering Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Timor-Leste and Singapore, analyse the asymmetrical power relationships between the sexes and how power differentials between men and women play out in the realm of politics are a reflection of the power contestations women face with men in other spheres of everyday life. Each chapter seeks to ask a different question in terms of where women viz. men stand in the political landscape of their countries, in an effort to answer the question of "Where are the women" in the gender trope in Asian politics. While the chapters are primarily empirical as they delve into the challenges, contradictions and conflicts Southeast Asian women encounter, the main assertion is that women's struggles in the realm of politics are a result of having to operate within power structures created principally by men, thereby producing barriers for women to enter politics, on the one hand, and to increase their numbers and widen their sphere of influence, on the other. Recognizing that Asian politics is dominated by men, the question of how women have negotiated a value system that is inherently male-centred and male-controlled is also discussed. The implicit narrative demonstrated in this book is that the political arena should not be considered in isolation from other arenas but instead is essentially a mirror of other arenas - whether the home, workplace, nation, and/or global spaces -each marked by power contestations between men and women and having a spill-over effect on the other, as well as shaping women's experiences in the political realm"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed December 19, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Women|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85147597|zSoutheast Asia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85008627-781 650 0 Political participation|xSex differences|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87001589|zSoutheast Asia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85008627- 781 650 0 Women politicians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh96009605|zSoutheast Asia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85008627-781 650 7 Women|xPolitical activity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1734136 650 7 Political participation|xSex differences.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1069403 650 7 Women politicians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1178383 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 651 7 Southeast Asia.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1240499 655 4 Electronic books. 700 1 Devasahayam, Theresa W.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2007202817|eeditor. 776 08 |cOriginal|z9781845199067|z1845199065|w(DLC) 2018005814 |w(OCoLC)1023815459 830 0 Sussex library of Asian and Asian American studies.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2016019238 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1986485|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
