In Crossing the Gate, Man Xu examines the lives of women in the Chinese province of Fujian during the Song dynasty. Tracking women's life experience across class lines, outside as well as inside the domestic realm, Xu challenges the accepted wisdom about women and gender roles in medieval China. She contextualizes women in a much broader physical space and social network, investigating the gaps between ideals and reality and examining women's own agency in gender construction. She argues that women's autonomy and mobility, conventionally attributed to Ming-Qing women of late imperial China, can be traced to the Song era. This thorough study of Song women's life experience connects women to the great political, economic, and social transitions of the time, and sheds light on the so-called 'Song-Yuan-Ming transition' from the perspective of gender studies. By putting women at the center of analysis and by focusing on the local and the quotidian, Crossing the Gate offers a new and nuanced picture of the Song Confucian revival"--Publisher's website. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1500|2fast 650 0 Women|zChina|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008113630|yTo 1500.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012483 650 0 Women|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008113627|zFujian Sheng|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80113116-781|xHistory|yTo 1500.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 650 0 Sex role|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85120663|zChina|zFujian Sheng|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80113116-781|xHistory|yTo 1500.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 650 0 Social classes|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111786|zFujian Sheng|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80113116-781|xHistory|yTo 1500.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 650 0 Social change|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008111784|zFujian Sheng|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80113116-781|xHistory|yTo 1500.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 650 7 Women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1176568 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Sex role.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1114598 650 7 Social classes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1122346 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 650 7 Gender roles.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000577 651 0 Fujian Sheng (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80113116|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008851 651 0 Fujian Sheng (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80113116|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 0 China|xHistory|ySong dynasty, 960-1279.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024066 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 651 7 China|zFujian Sheng.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1209951 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aXu, Man, 1979-|tCrossing the Gate. |dAlbany : State University of New York Press, [2016] |z9781438463216|w(DLC) 2016007755 830 0 SUNY series in Chinese philosophy and culture.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86724503 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1403287|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
