Tracing the experiences of Africans on two Danish slave ships that arrived in Costa Rica in 1710, the Christianus Quintus and Fredericus Quartus, the author examines slavery in Costa Rica from 1600 to 1750. Lohse looks at the ethnic origins of the Africans and narrates their capture and transport to the coast, their embarkation and passage, and finally their acculturation to slavery and their lives as slaves in Costa Rica. Following the experiences of girls and boys, women and men, he shows how the conditions of slavery in a unique local setting determined the constraints that slaves faced and how they responded to their condition"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1821|2fast 650 0 Slavery|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123314|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Plantation life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85102824|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Enslaved persons|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123347|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 Black people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85014672|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Africans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85001757|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Creoles|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85033926|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Ethnicity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85045187|zCosta Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79070075-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Slavery.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120426 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Plantation life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1065779 650 7 Enslaved persons.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1120522 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Black people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833880 650 7 Africans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/799938 650 7 Creoles.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/882825 650 7 Ethnicity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/916034 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 Costa Rica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79070075 |xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007552|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Costa Rica|xHistory|yTo 1821.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85033214 651 7 Costa Rica.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205604 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLohse, Russell, 1968-|tAfricans into Creoles|z9780826354976|w(DLC) 2014001281 |w(OCoLC)877851156 830 0 Diálogos (Albuquerque, N.M.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n94009684 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=768346|zOnline eBook.
