Far from lagging behind Northern manufacturers, the most sophisticated Southern planters used complex management techniques, measuring and monitoring their human capital with precision. More broadly, the book explores the complex relationship between slavery and capitalism in American history. The traditional story of modern management focuses on the factories of England and New England, largely ignoring plantation economies. Drawing on extensive archival research into plantation accounting practices, the author argues that the harsh realities of slavery were compatible with a highly quantitative, calculating style of management. Planters allocated and reallocated slaves' labor from task to task, precisely monitored their productivity, and depreciated their "human capital" decades before depreciation became a common accounting technique.--|cProvided by publisher 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (ProQuest Ebook Central, viewed October 3, 2018). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1700-1899|2fast 650 0 Slavery|xEconomic aspects|zUnited States|xHistory|y18th century. 650 0 Slavery|xEconomic aspects|zUnited States|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Slavery|xEconomic aspects|zWest Indies, British|xHistory |y18th century. 650 0 Slavery|xEconomic aspects|zWest Indies, British|xHistory |y19th century. 650 0 Human capital|zUnited States|xHistory. 650 0 Human capital|zWest Indies, British|xHistory. 650 0 Plantations|zUnited States|xAccounting|xHistory. 650 0 Plantations|zWest Indies, British|xAccounting|xHistory. 650 0 Plantation owners|zUnited States|xHistory. 650 0 Plantation owners|zWest Indies, British|xHistory. 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS|xLabor.|2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xLabor & Industrial Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|y19th Century.|2bisacsh 650 7 Human capital.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00962878 650 7 Plantation owners.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01065786 650 7 Plantations|xAccounting.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01065801 650 7 Slavery|xEconomic aspects.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01120438 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 651 7 West Indies|zBritish West Indies.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01243266 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRosenthal, Caitlin.|tAccounting for slavery.|dCambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2018|z9780674972094|w(DLC) 2017058060 |w(OCoLC)1019844344 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1848517|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
