Incorporating materials ranging from canonical literatures to the lowest form of street publication, Marcus Wood writes from the conviction that slavery was, and still is, a dilemma for everyone in England, and seeks to explain why English society has constructed Atlantic slavery in the way it has. He takes on the works of canonic eighteenth- and nineteenth-century white authors which claimed, when written, to 'account' for slavery, and asks with some scepticism what kind of 'truth' they hold.; Taking an interdisciplinary approach, chapters focus on the writings of the major Romantic poets, English Radicals William Cobbett and John Thelwall, the Surinam writings of John Stedman, the full range of slavery texts generated by Harriet Martineau, John Newton, and the social prophets Carlyle and Ruskin. Slavery, Empathy, and Pornography also contains a radical new critique of the operations of slavery within the work of Austen and Charlotte Bronte. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1899|2fast 650 0 English literature|y18th century|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102755 650 0 Slavery in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94008615 650 0 Literature and society|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008107031 650 0 Literature and society|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008107030 650 0 English literature|y19th century|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102754 650 0 Slavery|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85123321|xPublic opinion|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006218|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Antislavery movements|zGreat Britain|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85123322|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Pornography|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85105008|zGreat Britain.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79023147-781 650 0 Empathy in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94004252 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 911989 650 7 Slavery in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1120515 650 7 Literature and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1000096 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Slavery.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120426 650 7 Public opinion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1082785 650 7 Antislavery movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /810800 650 7 Pornography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1071875 650 7 Empathy in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /908892 650 7 Pornography.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0001128 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWood, Marcus.|tSlavery, empathy, and pornography.|dOxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2002|z0198187203|w(DLC) 2002070174|w(OCoLC)50348119 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=150002|zOnline eBook.
