While he considers the changing legal status of slavery, much of the book provides a detailed and nuanced reconstruction of the circumstances of black Montrealers and their lived experience. The resulting picture is remarkably complex, showing the variety of occupations held by blacks, the relationships they had with those they served, their encounters with the judicial and political systems, and the racial mingling that came with intermarriage and apprenticeships. Done with Slavery casts the categories of blackness and slavery in a new light, showing that broad histories of the phenomenon must begin to take into account the specifics of the lives of "marginal" black populations."--Publisher Description. 546 Includes some text in French. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1763-1841|2fast 650 0 Black people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85014672|zQuébec (Province)|zMontréal|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80132975-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Slavery|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123314|zQuébec (Province)|zMontréal|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80132975-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Black people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85014672|zQuébec (Province)|zMontréal|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80132975-781|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2001008850 650 7 Black people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/833880 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Slavery.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1120426 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 651 0 Montréal (Québec)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80132975|xRace relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007552|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 0 Montréal (Québec)|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95002319 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMackey, Frank.|tDone with slavery. |dMontreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, ©2010 |z9780773535787|w(DLC) 2010549454|w(OCoLC)320185559 830 0 Studies on the history of Quebec ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n93018236|v21. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=404084|zOnline eBook.
