Making democracy work without social capital: institutional capital -- If you build it they will come: institutional capital in democratic development -- Conclusion. 520 "Drawing on extensive field work in Nicaragua and Argentina, as well as public opinion and elite data, Leslie E. Anderson's Social Capital in Developing Democracies explores the contribution of social capital to the process of democratization and the limits of that contribution. Anderson finds that in Nicaragua, strong, positive, bridging social capital has enhanced democratization while in Argentina the legacy of Peronism has created bonding and non-democratic social capital that perpetually undermines the development of democracy. Faced with the reality of an anti-democratic form of social capital, Anderson suggests that Argentine democracy is developing on the basis of an alternative resource - institutional capital. Anderson concludes that social capital can and does enhance democracy under historical conditions that have created horizontal ties among citizens, but that social capital can also undermine democratization where historical conditions have created vertical ties with leaders and suspicion or non- cooperation among citizens"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Social capital (Sociology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00009986|zArgentina|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79070134-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Social capital (Sociology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00009986|zNicaragua|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80009698-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Democracy|zArgentina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008102154|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Democracy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85036647|zNicaragua|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80009698-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Social capital (Sociology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1122281 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Democracy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/890077 651 0 Argentina|xPolitics and government|y20th century.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85007065 651 0 Nicaragua|xPolitics and government|y20th century.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88002172 651 7 Argentina.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205614 651 7 Nicaragua.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1228307 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAnderson, Leslie (Leslie E.).|tSocial capital in developing democracies.|dNew York : Cambridge University Press, 2010|z9780521192743|w(DLC) 2009048077 |w(OCoLC)468978410 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=320474|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
