When newcomers first arrived in the 1850s, they hastened to assemble the familiar cohort of cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, and other animals that defined European agriculture. This, in turn, contributed to the dispossession of the Native residents of the area. However, just as these animals were used to create a Euro-American city, the elimination of these same animals from Seattle was key to the creation of the new middle-class neighborhoods of the twentieth century. As dogs and cats came to symbolize home and family, Seattleites' relationship with livestock became distant and exploitative, demonstrating the deep social contradictions that characterize the modern American metropolis. Throughout Seattle's history, people have sorted animals into categories and into places as a way of asserting power over animals, other people, and property. In this book, Frederick Brown explores the dynamic, troubled relationship humans have with animals. In so doing he challenges us to acknowledge the role of animals of all sorts in the making and remaking of cities"-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Animals|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85005249|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Animals|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh89005500|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Human-animal relationships|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85062838|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 City and town life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026255|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social change|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123918|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Urban ecology (Biology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85141309|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Urban ecology (Sociology)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004757|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041965-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Animals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/809468 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Animals|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/809537 650 7 Human-animal relationships.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/963482 650 7 City and town life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 862081 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Urban ecology (Biology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1162404 650 7 Urban ecology (Sociology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1733718 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79041965|xEnvironmental conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005384 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79041965|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 7 Washington (State)|zSeattle.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1204940 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBrown, Frederick L., 1962-|tCity is more than human.|dSeattle : University of Washington Press, [2016]|z9780295999340|w(DLC) 2016020377|w(OCoLC)946461779 830 0 Weyerhaeuser environmental book.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n91038484 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1363966|zOnline eBook.
